Research Competition Scholarship

The AAPI academic affairs committee, MSRF and YPS sections would like to announce the annual medical student, resident, and fellows research competition. Each year we establish 3 monetary gifts for the top 3 original research abstracts presented at the annual conference. 10 finalists will be selected by a panel of judges and invited to the national conference (Las Vegas, June 25-29, 2008) to present their poster and research. The top 3 presenters will win cash prizes of $1,000, $750, $500 respectively for first, second, and third places. An additional number of entrants will be selected to display their posters for informational purposes only. The deadline for submission has been extended to April 30,2008. All entrants must be AAPI members. Finalists will be notified by e-mail. Email abstracts to preselect@aapimsr.org. Entrants must be able to attend the national conference in order to qualify as a finalist. Questions may be directed to Anita Bangale, AAPI-MSRF President-Elect, at preselect@aapimsr.org.

The following are guidelines for applying for these 3 scholarships:

  1. A structured abstract of no more than 500 words, consisting of four paragraphs, with the headings Background (the hypothesis of the study must be clearly stated here), Methods, Results, and Conclusions. A fifth paragraph, headed Clinical Relevance should be added for basic-science articles.
  2. The abstract should not exceed 1 page.
  3. We have a policy of blinded peer review so we ask that the abstract must not contain any mention of the authors' names or initials or the institution at which the study was done.
  4. Please submit the abstract as an e-mail attachment in MS Word.
  5. In the text/body of the e-mail please include the Abstract Title, list of authors, Institution(s), contact information of the entrant including name, title (med student/resident/fellow, specialty, year, name of school/institution), address, telephone, and e-mail.
  6. Please submit a letter from your residency director/Dean releasing you to attend the AAPI conference. Please scan this letter and send as a .jpeg or .tiff attachment with your abstract.
  7. Five to ten finalists will be chosen for a poster and oral presentation, Five alternates will be chosen for poster display only.
  8. Oral presentations should last eight minutes. Please allow a few minutes after each talk for questions. The entire time allotted per speaker is twelve minutes.
  9. Failure to follow the above guidelines may result in disqualification.
  10. DO NOT apply if you will not be able to attend the conference and present your research.

Thanks again for your interest. We look forward to hearing from you.
