Research Competition Guidelines

28th Annual AAPI Convention
Washington DC (June 23 - 27, 2010)

2010 AAPI NATIONAL RESEARCH COMPETITION AT THE WASHINGTON DC CONVENTION

The academic affairs committee, AAPI-MSR, and YPS would like to announce the annual student/resident/fellow research competition. Each year we establish monetary gifts for the top original research abstracts presented at the annual conference. The topics of the research may include any topic related to medicine from basic science to clinical studies in any specialty. Six finalists will be selected by a panel of judges and invited to the national conference (Washinton DC,  June 23-27th) to give an oral presentation of their research. From these presentations, the top 2 presenters will win cash prizes totaling ($1,000 for first and $750 for second). The deadline for submission is April 15, 2010. Previous winners are not eligible to submit the same research; however, they can submit a new abstract. Previous submissions are eligible for re-submission. All entrants must be AAPI members. Finalists will be notified by e-mail on or around April 22, 2010. Abstracts should be e-mailed to the MSRF president at preselect@aapimsr.org.

AAPI-MSRF will be offering 2 travel awards of $250 each this year based on the quality of abstracts submitted (see below for guidelines). We also encourage all applicants to investigate other options for funding from their departments and institutions since many will provide funding for national presentations. Only one abstract may be submitted per member. Entrants must be able to attend the national conference in order to qualify as a finalist.

Submission Guidelines:

A structured abstract of no more than 500 words and not exceeding one page, consisting of four paragraphs, with the headings Background (the hypothesis of the study must be clearly stated here), Methods, Results, and Conclusions. A fifth paragraph, headed Clinical Relevance should be added for basic-science articles.

Please submit the abstract as an e-mail attachment in MS Word.

In the text/body of the e-mail please include the Abstract Title, list of authors, Institution(s), contact information of the entrant including name, title (med student/resident/fellow, specialty, year, name of school/institution), address, telephone, and e-mail.

Six finalists will be chosen for an oral presentation.

Oral presentations should last eight minutes. Please allow a few minutes after each talk for questions. The entire time allotted per speaker is twelve minutes.

Failure to follow the above guidelines may result in disqualification.

DO NOT apply if you will not be able to attend the conference and present your research.

Please email preselect@aapimsr.org with any questions.  We look forward to your participation!
