Please join the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) and the South Asian Bar Association of Washington DC (SABA-DC) for an evening of networking that will benefit two hospitals in India - the Satchidananda Institute for Medical Services (SIMS) in south India and Hospital for Hope in north India.
After the holidays are over, take a moment to catch up with friends and colleagues and support these two non-profit organizations. Mezza Luna will be offering complimentary appetizers and drink specials and will be donating a portion of the bar tab that evening to the charities.
SIMS is a hospital in Kerala that provides much needed medical services to indigent people in South India. A newsletter highlighting the hospital's inauguration last year, and describing some of its early successes, is here.
Hospital for Hope aims to fund the construction of a hospital in the
rural Northeast Indian state of Jharkhand. Basic health care in the
region is difficult to access. The nearest hospital is in the capital
city of Ranchi, a 3-hour drive away on a good day, with transportation costing a full day’s salary or more. For a total cost of $100,000 a self-sustaining hospital can be built. For more information, see www.hospitalforhope.com.

By a vote of 243-183 today (Nov.19th,2009), the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 3961, a bill that repeals the current Medicare physician payment formula, known as the sustainable growth rate (SGR), and replaces it with a new framework.

Thanks for being patient with us as we get up and running. It's been a crazy couple of months but we'll be posting more up to date information more regularly.
For now check out the recent health system reform bulletin brought to our attention by our new legislative chair, Pravien.
We'll also be posting some pictures from our fundraising events we've been hosting around the country. Interested in having AAPI host an event near you? Let our community service chair, Lipi, know!

Thanks to all who made it to the 18th Annual NetIP Conference.
The 18th annual NetIP conference was held in Toronto this year, from September 4 - September 6. I was sent as the AAPI MSRF representative. I attended key speaker events, as well as the social events. I talked to people about what AAPI is, its importance, and encouraged people to become involved. I discussed our community service events that we will be hosting this year, and suggested that people visit our website for more information regarding these and other events. Of course, most of my time was spent advertising our biggest event of the year, the Annual June Convention, which is being held this year in Washington D.C., from June 23 - June 27, 2010. I hope that my presence at NetIP sparked interest in AAPI MSRF. Suggestions for the future include hosting an AAPI event at NetIP, and possibly setting up a booth to recruit members and answer any questions.
Stay tuned for pictures!
AAPI-MSRF Board Leads in Orlando
On September 26, 2008 board members of American Association
of Physicians of Indian Origin's(AAPI)'s Medical Students, Residents, and
Fellows section (MSRF) met for their annual retreat in Orlando, Florida. The
purpose of the retreat was two-fold: to plan the future 2009 convention and
to enhance leadership skills necessary to take this young physician group
into the future of medicine. The national AAPI organization boasts over
42,000 members and 14,000 of which are in the MSRF group. With such great
numbers AAPI MSRF has the potential to be quite a formidable force in not only advocacy for physicians but more importantly the patients they treat. Read all about
the weekend's festivities here.
Online Mentorship database now running!
Interested in doing a specific residency or fellowship? Or interested in networking with local AAPI-MSRF members in your field? As part of a new initiative to make our membership more beneficial to our members, the AAPI Medical Student, Resident and Fellows section has created a national mentorship database to facilitate professional networking among medical students/residents/fellows and interested young physicians. This database will allow members to search for AAPI-MSRF patrons both in their desired specialty (pediatrics, oncology, radiology, etc.) and in their region. Join now for free!
